Save water and save money May 12th 2009 The latest Government publication on efficiency in the home ‘The Code for Sustainable Homes’ includes guidelines on water efficiency with the target level of usage set at 80 litres per person per day.Whilst this may sound a lot, on average every person at present uses around 150 litres per day so the Code aims to virtually halve potable water consumption.
Around 33% of this water consumption is for WC flushing. Whilst the current WC standard is for 6/3 litre dual flush operation, the latest development is the 4.5/3 litre dual flush which can save even more water and Impulse Bathrooms have developed this low volume flush which really does work. It is highly important not just to operate a low level flush but to make absolutely sure that the flush does clean the pan and also clears water through to the drains. Under Building Regulations and the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations this requires sufficient initial flush volume and velocity, coupled with 2.5 litres of trailing water. This is important as any failure to clean the pan results in repeat flushing which therefore eliminates any water saving.
Also failure to clear to the drains is likely to cause a blockage. Another potential problem area is in the throat of the trap. The trapage needs to be designed to provide the necessary velocity of water to clear to the drains and this is achieved by narrowing the throat. However there can be a temptation at the design stage to over narrow the throat to increase velocity, but this can easily result in blockages. The key is to design the flush mechanism so that it delivers the velocity, direction and volume to clean the pan and for the pan trap to ensure speed of water flow and trailing water volume to clear to drains, which requires trap dimensions sufficient to avoid restriction to the point of blockage.
Impulse Bathrooms Tribune WC suite has led the way in developing the 4.5/3 litre flush WC which fulfils these requirements. It is DEFRA registered as a water saving appliance and has also been awarded the Waterwise marque. It can reduce the amount of potable water used for WC flushing by over 50% and yet it costs no more than the standard 6/3 model.
It can play a major role in reducing the nation’s water consumption.
